MM Engineering used parametric modelling to design precise, efficient, and bespoke flood defence solutions, improving accuracy, collaboration, and innovation.
Construction Sector
The design process is fundamental to delivering high-performance defence solutions. Each of our clients faces unique challenges, requiring bespoke products to ensure their assets are fully protected from damage.
By utilising parametric modelling in the design phase, we can create highly accurate and reliable products far more efficiently than traditional manual methods.
Currently, we are developing standard templates for every product using parametric modelling techniques. By defining key governing parameters—such as flood height or the operating mechanism of a door—the system can automatically arrange components within a model. This approach not only saves significant time but also eliminates the risk of human error, allowing our designers to focus on research and development and tackling complex design challenges.
One of the most powerful features of parametric modelling software is its ability to automatically generate a bill of materials. This greatly streamlines the process for our engineers. Instead of manually counting each component required to manufacture a flood gate or blast door, they have access to an accurate and comprehensive list of all raw materials and components. This also allows us to quote jobs more precisely—especially crucial for projects with unique specifications.
Parametric modelling also enhances collaboration across different divisions within MM Engineering. Its reporting function can provide engineers with feedback, highlighting aspects of a design that may require further analysis. Additionally, it offers a more efficient way to manage revision control and continuous improvement processes.
Another advantage is its impact on employee development. New hires gain a deeper understanding of MM Engineering’s design principles more quickly, as the system clearly illustrates how products vary based on key parameters. Additionally, exposure to parametric modelling fosters the development of coding skills—an increasingly valuable and transferable skill in the engineering industry.
At MM Engineering, our designs are modular. We manufacture all components at our Port Talbot facility before transporting them to site for installation. Parametric modelling provides the flexibility to adapt standard parameters while customising specific modules for bespoke projects.
As demonstrated, parametric modelling offers a wide range of benefits—from improving efficiency to enabling our engineers to push boundaries and develop innovative solutions for custom projects.
A win-win for us and our clients.
